The Secretary-General’s Roadmap is a response to the findings of the High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation, which conducted two years worth of multi-stakeholder consultation and deliberation on key issues such as digital connectivity, digital inclusion, human rights, artificial intelligence, and trust and security.

livestreamIn 1989 the world’s largest physics laboratory, CERN, was a hive of ideas and information stored on multiple incompatible computers. Sir Tim Berners-Lee envisioned a unifying structure for linking information across different computers, and wrote a proposal in March 1989 called “Information Management: A Proposal“.

By 1991 this vision of universal connectivity had become the World Wide Web.

To celebrate 30 years since Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s proposal and to kick-start a series of celebrations worldwide, CERN hosted a 30th Anniversary event in the morning of 12 March 2019 in partnership with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and with the World Wide Web Foundation. Later in the day the Science Museum in London, the home of the original NeXT Computer used by Sir Tim to design the World Wide Web, ran a second event, also in partnership with the World Wide Web Foundation.

Sir Tim spoke at both events, and both will be restreamed in full today Wednesday 13 March on the Internet Society Livestream Channel, starting at 09:00 EDT (13:00 UTC).

Tim goes through the early days of World Wide Web development, and finishes with passionate arguments for net neutrality and a practical micropayment system for web content. Video is below.

Global Solution NetworksThe Global Solution Networks program at the University of Toronto has released a two part research report The Remarkable Internet Governance Network, authored by former Internet Society President/CEO Lynn St. Amour, and GSN Executive Director Don Tapscott. The report is intended to assist governments and organizations to better understand the Internet governance network and how to help it succeed.

The recent IANA Globalization initiative is noted. From the press release:

[St. Amour and Tapscott] describe the multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance, why it works remarkably well and what needs to be done to ensure a robust, global, accessible and effectively governed Internet for future generations. [They] applaud the NTIA decision as a natural step forward and a significant confirmation that the multi-stakeholder model is effective and legitimate. They explain that evolving the global multi-stakeholder ecosystem is not only right and timely, but also the best way to address some of the thornier policy issues global society faces. These issues range from privacy, security and Net neutrality, to access and intellectual property.

Included in the report’s additional materials are transcripts of interviews with Tim Berners-Lee, Fadi Chehadé, Vint Cerf, Bertrand de La Chapelle, and Jonathan Zittrain. The report is free to download:

Sir Tim Berners Lee was this year’s keynote speaker at Telekom Austria Group’s future.talk 2011 which had the theme World Wild Web – Who Rules the Internet Society?. Other speakers included; journalist Antonia Rados, who talked about the Arab spring; O.I.I. professor Viktor Mayer-Schönberger who talked about his current efforts to use Wikipedia to predict revolutions; and Anke Domscheit-Berg who talked about Open Government, a topic on which Berners-Lee also touched.
