WEBCAST NOV 19: Haptics for XR – How designing great haptics can support use case accessibility – Eric Vezzoli

On Thursday Nov 19 2020 at 1pm EST / 18:00 UTC / 3am JST (Fri) the Accessibility VR Meetup hosts ‘Haptics for XR – How designing great haptics can support use case accessibility‘ on Mozilla Hubs. Hand interaction with virtual content in XR is mainly mediated by controllers equipped with haptics actuators. Haptics can play a strong role for accessibility through sensory substitution, which means deliver through the sense of touch information otherwise mediated by sound or vision. Presenter Eric Vezzoli will focus on haptics design guidelines for XR, and a practical approach on how to implement and realize them via the Interhaptics haptic composer. The session will be webcast live via a partnership with the Internet Society Accessibility SIG (A11ySIG).

Designing Augmented Reality Systems to Empower People with Low Vision

livestream

livestreamOn Thursday October 22 2020 at 7pm EDT / 23:00 UTC / 8am JST (Fri) the Accessibility VR Meetup hosts ‘Designing Augmented Reality Systems to Empower People with Low Vision‘ on Mozilla Hubs.

Low vision is a visual impairment that falls short of blindness but cannot be corrected by eyeglasses or contact lenses. Unlike people who are blind, low vision people have residual vision and extensively use their vision in daily activities. However, prior research has mainly focused on providing only audio and tactile feedback for blind users, overlooking low vision people’s residual vision and unique needs. To address this gap in low vision accessibility, Yuhang Zhao, a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell Tech, seeks to leverage the residual vision that low vision people have, and design intelligent augmented reality (AR) systems that provide direct visual augmentations according to the users’ visual abilities and tasks.

livestreamOn Thursday July 16 2020 at 7pm EDT / 23:00 UTC / 8am JST (Fri) the Accessibility VR Meetup hosts ‘From Hack to Product Feature – how to leverage R&D at work through hackathons‘ on Mozilla Hubs. Creating open-source projects in hackathons to test the viability of an idea/concept, as well as user-test for accessibility, is a great way for team leaders to empower their employees to grow, take ownership and make better products. Hackathons are naturally competitive and creative environments that are time capped, exerting positive pressure on the participants to deliver results and win prices. Roland Dubois will show  accessible XR concepts that he built at the MIT Reality Hack in January 2020 and how it would convert into a new product feature at the SaaS company. The session will be webcast live via a partnership with the Internet Society Accessibility SIG (A11ySIG).

livestream

livestreamOn Thursday July 1 2020 at 7am EDT (11:00 UTC) the Accessibility VR Meetup hosts ‘Improving Mobility by Assisting Cognition: A Case Study‘ on Mozilla Hubs. To date, existing navigational aids (mobile apps, GPS) remain weakly adapted to the cognitive needs of human beings. This is especially true for people with cognitive disabilities, who face specific difficulties when it comes to finding one’s way in the city. Romain Delgrange will present a new study assessing the effectiveness and usability of a prototypal aid designed to meet the needs of people with cognitive disabilities. The session will be webcast live via a partnership with the Internet Society Accessibility SIG (A11ySIG).

WEBCAST TODAY: @A11yVR – VR Interactions – A comparison between Gaze, Controller and Hand w/ Sam Qorbani @HSamarQ

livestream

livestreamToday, Thursday May 21 2020 at 7pm EDT (23:00 UTC) the Accessibility VR Meetup hosts ‘VR Interactions – A comparison between Gaze, Controller and Hand‘ on Mozilla Hubs. Object selection and manipulation are an essential part of any Virtual Reality (VR) experience, and several studies are done every year to explore this area of technology. For the person(s) with a temporary or permanent physical disability, virtual reality (VR) means the potential to try activities which they usually cannot do in real life. However, the use of a controller can be challenging for certain users with limited hand/finger dexterity. Sam Qorbani will talk about how he is exploring object selection and manipulation using gaze-based/head tracking for Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) environment using the Oculus Quest device. The session will be webcast live via a partnership with the Internet Society Accessibility SIG (A11ySIG).
