ICANN “reaffirms” second gTLD round #ICANN #newgTLDs

ICANN

ICANNWhen ICANN, at their Singapore meeting in Jun 2011, voted to approve the current round of new gTLD applications, board member Sebastien Bachollet strongly suggested that a second round be announced as soon as possible to ease the rush.

On Feb 12 2012 the ICANN board voted to “reaffirm” a second round, however no date was announced. The resolution noted:

These prerequisites include specifically addressing the GAC requirement for assessment of trademark protections and root zone operation.

On the former issue ICANN has opened a public comment period specifically on the need, perceived by some, for defensive registrations at the top level.

In his response there, Antony Van Couvering of Minds+Machines estimates that it will be a minimum of three years before another round is initiated.

House Judiciary Committee holds hearing on HR.3261, opposition mounts #SOPA

US House

Today, Wed. November 16 2011 the U.S House of Representatives Judiciary Committee held a hearing on H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act, which was introduced October 26, 2011. This hearing, of which no recording is currently available, was controversial – not only because of the provisions of the Act, but also because, with the exception of Google, every invited witness is a vocal proponent.

Opponents have deemed today American Censorship Day and statements have been issued opposing the bill including letters from corporations, advocacy groups, members of Congress and law professors.

A petition on the White House site has already surpassed its target of 25k signatures.
