On 11 May 2026, at 09:00 EDT (05:00 UTC) the Platform Cooperativism Consortium (PCC)  hosted a webinar ‘When the State Goes Digital: Public Platforms, Cooperative Hybrids, and the Politics of Infrastructure‘.

Across Brazil, South Korea, and Kerala (India), governments have stepped into digital markets to confront platform monopolies, reduce labor precarity, and prevent the loss of local economic value. These interventions have taken many forms: state-owned apps, public–cooperative hybrids, and efforts to formalize digital solidarity economies. While often launched with strong public-facing missions such as lower fees and better working conditions, many of these initiatives have struggled to achieve viability in markets shaped by network effects, rapid iteration cycles, and dependence on private cloud and payment systems.

This event examined a central policy question: under what institutional conditions can public or cooperative digital platforms achieve both economic durability and democratic governance?

On Friday-Saturday November 9-10 2017 the 3rd annual Platform Cooperativism Conference takes place in New York City.

The first platform cooperativism event in 2015 popularized the idea, and the second event in 2016 brought together co-op and union leaders to push the model forward. This third event will zero in on ways that platform cooperatives can help to address some of the world’s most urgent challenges. The fairer digital economy we need is already emerging everywhere. The theme is “The People’s Disruption: Platform Co-ops for Global Challenges”. The event will be livestreamed on the Internet Society Livestream Channels.

Trebor Scholz, Associate Professor at The New School, has penned the concept of “platform cooperativism” to describe this movement in the making. He will be in conversation with four pioneers in this area to explore the prospects for structures of collective ownership, finance, data transparency, and democratic governance online. Emma Yorra of the Center for Family Life in Sunset Park, will introduce Coopify, a platform for women-led immigrant cooperatives in Brooklyn. Brendan Martin, founder and director of The Working World, will speak about cooperative finance. San Francisco-based author and entrepreneur Chelsea Rustrum will talk about her experiences with sharing communities. Felix Weth will introduce Fairmondo, a cooperatively-owned online-marketplace, founded in Berlin. The event will be webcast live via the Internet Society Livestream Channel.
