WEBCAST TODAY: Spectrum and Indigenous Connectivity: Intervening in ISED Consultation

Today Friday Oct 1 2021 at 11:00 EDT (15:00 UTC) ISOC.LIVE will webcast a recording of the Internet Society Sep 21 webinar to discuss the importance of spectrum for enabling broadband Internet service in Indigenous communities across Canada. Ensuring access to adequate spectrum provides opportunities for underserved communities to connect themselves with reliable, affordable Internet that is provided by the current market.

In August, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) initiated a consultation on a new supplementary licensing process (Access Licensing framework) for unused spectrum to support innovation and the availability of rural services. If implemented correctly, this process can be a major benefit for Indigenous connectivity efforts across Canada.

This webinar provided the background needed to engage in ISED’s consultation process, which closes on October 12, focusing on the importance of spectrum for Indigenous communities, the current state of spectrum policy in Canada, promising practices for spectrum allocation in the US, and navigating the consultation process.

Each year the ICS community comes together to discuss ways to ensure Alaska Native, American Indian, Inuit, Native Hawaiian, First Nations and Métis communities have affordable, high-quality and sustainable Internet access, and talk about how connectivity supports social and economic development.

The ICS 2021 will highlight Indigenous communities pursuing innovative and independent ways to connect to the Internet and their unique challenges to connectivity – further complicated by exclusion from national markets and the policy making processes that support them.

The 4th Indigenous Connectivity Summit brings together community network managers and operators, Indigenous-owned Internet service providers, community members, researchers, policy makers and Indigenous leaders. We discuss ways to ensure Alaska Native, American Indian, Inuit, Native Hawaiian, First Nations and Métis communities have affordable, high-quality and sustainable Internet access, and talk about how it can support social and economic development. The Summit provides practical, hands-on training to help Indigenous communities connect to the Internet to and creates opportunities to build relationships and share useful knowledge and experience.

LivestreamOn Thursday 25 January 2018 the Internet Society New Mexico Chapter will hold its first ever chapter meeting at the Santa Fe Indian School. Following up on last November’s Indigenous Connectivity Summit, this event will begin with a panel discussion among key players in New Mexico’s growing DIY Internet movement, and will include representatives from the Middle Rio Grande Pueblo Tribal Consortium (comprising the Cochiti, San Felipe, Santa Ana and Santo Domingo Pueblos), the Navajo Nation, and the Laguna Pueblo, among others. These pueblos are breaking new ground in tribal Internet networking, and in doing so, leading the charge in advancing network connectivity throughout the state. They will be talking about what they are doing, how they’re doing it, and sharing insights and best practices. The event will be webcast live on the Internet Society Livestream Channel, YouTube, and Facebook. Santa Fe is UTC-7 = 2 hours behind NYC.
