On Tuesday 14 April 2026 the European Commission, in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will hold a hybrid event ‘Seminar on Human Rights and ICT Standardisation‘ in Brussels.

This seminar builds on a workshop held at WTSA-24 (the ITU World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly, New Delhi, October 2024) exploring how ICT standards can uphold human rights in the era of emerging technologies, and follows through on an action proposed by EU Member States and the European Commission to TSAG 2025 (the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group). The event examines how technical standards for AI, the metaverse, and 5G/6G can be developed to preserve human rights — including privacy, non-discrimination, and access to information — in a connected digital world. It emphasizes a multi-stakeholder approach bringing together governments, international organizations, the private sector, civil society, and standards bodies,

WEBCAST MAY 13 – EU’s Digital Future Seminar #2 – Assessing the Material Shaping of EU Digital Sovereignty in Response to the War in Ukraine

ISOC LIVE

ISOC LIVEOn Monday May 13 2024 at 15:00-16:00 CEST (11:00-12:00 UTC) the Brussels School of Governance hosts a seminar ‘Assessing the Material Shaping of EU Digital Sovereignty in Response to the War in Ukraine‘.

The war in Ukraine is known to have informed and inspired the acceleration of EU legislations aimed at strengthening the EU’s capacity to protect its “cyberspace” against the spread of disinformation and foreign interference, which the European Commission now equates to “ European digital sovereignty”.

While many have claimed the predominant discursive nature of digital sovereignty policies in the EU, recent sanctions banning the online broadcasting of Russian media outlets on EU territory could be interpreted as one of the first techno-material digital sovereignty measures. In this seminar, Prof. Niels ten Oever will present his latest research on this topical issue by exploring the implications of these recent sanctions for the European approach to Internet infrastructures and digital sovereignty.

WEBCAST MAR 23 – CITI Governance – Fair Share or an Internet Traffic Tax? The EU Telcos vs Big Content

isoc live

isoc liveOn Thursday March 23 2023 at 11:00-12:30 EDT (15:00-16:30 UTC) the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information, as part of its Global Digital Governance series, presents a webinar ‘Fair Share or an Internet Traffic Tax? The EU Telcos vs Big Content‘.

In Europe there is heated debate whether a telco-proposed shift to a Sending-Party-Network-Pays (SPNP) system comprises ‘fair compensation’ or is in fact an ‘Internet Traffic Tax.’ It is at odds with current peering practices, would require further regulations that could favor incumbent carriers, and an EU shift to SPNP could ripple across the the global Internet. Today’s participants will lay out the merits of the respective arguments, assess the compatibility of SPNP with other policy frameworks and objectives, discuss alternative options for funding broadband rollouts and digital transformation, and, in particular, consider the potential implications of EU adoption for the global Internet environment and digital governance.
