Made in NYYesterday, Tuesday February 19 2013, Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited the offices of Buzzfeed to launch the City’s “We are Made in NY” initiative. (Video below) Local tech companies can apply for permission to use the ‘Made in NY’ service mark in their products. There is already a list of almost a 1000 qualifiers. To qualify 75% of their production must be New York based. The mark has been in existence since 2005, mainly applied to films and tv. Further components of the initiative include training,  resources, job guidance, and exposure. Companies are being asked to submit 60 second videos.

The site says:

We Are Made In New York is an economic development initiative that supports the city’s vibrant tech community by highlighting job opportunities in the sector, celebrating the growing number of NYC-based digital companies, and providing access to resources and programs that help tech companies grow, and novices learn how to become part of the innovation ecosystem.

Launched by the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment in partnership with the New York Tech MeetupWe Are Made in NY highlights New York City’s burgeoning digital industry and underscores Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s commitment to strengthening the city as a global hub for innovation.

The same coalition is backing,as it did last year, a showcase of NY Tech startups, at SxSw – this is now known as Made in NY:Austin and has its own website.
