On October 7, 2025 a the Accessibility NYC Meetup (A11yNYC) hosted a meetup ‘Literacy Beyond Print: Accessible Reading, Tech and Graphics at the NYPL‘. Chancey Fleet & Shane Smith of the New York Public Library’s Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book branch, discussed how it offers New Yorkers who are blind, low-vision, or have other disabilities impacting print reading, a world of literacy options, including the free loan of digital Braille e-readers, new and improved talking book players, tech and arts programming, and the Dimensions Lab for the creation of tactile graphics and 3D models.

The meetup was webcast live via a partnership with the Internet Society New York Accessibility SIG.

ISOC LIVEOn Thursday October 6 2022 at 11:00 UTC the ISOC-NY Accessibility SIG (A11ySIG) will host a webinar ‘Introduction to screenreader.app‘. The free ScreenReader app, developed by Abra, can be used to learn how to use VoiceOver and TalkBack. Initiated during a COVID lockdown to help visually impaired people to digitally learn how to use a screen reader, now it is also used to create awareness and help other target groups, such as professional developers and testers, how to use a screen reader.

Aaron Gluck of Clemson University will discuss developing two VR game prototypes, The Enclosing Dark: A VR Auditory Adventure and Racing in the Dark, neither of which uses visuals to provide information to the player, but focus on the usually supplemental information channels: audio and haptic feedback.

@Google free online course – Introduction to #Web #Accessibility – Lesson 1 preview available

Google Online Courses will this month present Introduction to Web Accessibility – a course that introduces tools and techniques for web developers to easily ensure that websites are more accessible to users who are blind or have low vision. The free course comprises text lessons, supplemental videos, practice code exercises and a hands-on project.  There is no requirement to do all the coursework so it’s ok just to lurk and look. Basic familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is recommended, and a Chrome browser, as the course uses the Google Chrome extensions ChromeVox and Accessibility Developer Tools.  A preview of Lesson 1 is available. An introductory video is below.
