Here at ISOC-NY we are already fans of Allied Fiber, and their innovative open access fiber build out. CEO Hunter Newby has four times been our guest. Now, via Carol Wilson and Light Reading TV, we get a chance to the meet the man responsible for the nuts and bolts, COO Jason Cohen:
.
Hunter Newby, CEO and President of Allied Fiber, has visited ISOC-NY more than once to explain the company’s plans to build an open access backbone fiber ring around the USA. We liked his ideas enough to invite him to participate in the Technology Panel at the recent INET New York. Writer John Savageau has interviewed Hunter and published part 1 – Hunter Newby on Communications in America – Are We Competitive? – of a resulting series of three articles.
Savageau concisely sums up the Allied Fiber philosophy. See below:
On Nov 17 2010 ISOC-NY hosted a panel of broadband infrastructure builders – Hunter Newby, CEO of Allied Fiber, Joe Calzone of the ION Upstate New York Rural Broadband Initiative, and Louis Houle of Connect Quebec. Strategies and impediments were discussed. The archived webcast can be seen below. Now ad-free and downloadable.
Discussion of Net Neutrality has often involved policy discussions about regulating or rationing bandwidth as a scarce resource.
On Wednesday, November 17th, ISOC-NY will host a panel with people who are building tomorrow’s broadband infrastructure to create an abundance of bandwidth that could one day make these issues moot.
Date: Wednesday, November 17, 2010
Time: 7-9 pm
Place: Room 201 Warren Weaver Hall 251 Mercer St NYC (just southeast of Washington Square)

The Oppenheimer 2010 Annual Technology, Media & Telecommunications Conference took place August 10-11, 2010 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. A webcast is available of audio of the Fiber Infra Panel (free login required).
The panel included Hunter Newby of Allied Fiber and an extended slideset of his recent ISOC-NY presentation is provided as an adjunct to the audio. Other panelists are Dan Caruso of Zayo, Bill LaPerch of Abovenet,
NiQ Lay of HKBN and Frank Mambuca of US Metrotel.
ISOC-NY held a meeting with Hunter Newby, CEO of Allied Fiber, on Jun 28 2010. This was an interesting and wide ranging roundtable discussion on AF’s plans to encircle the entire USA with a dark fiber ring with carrier neutral access at any point.
As the meeting was held at short notice, regrettably our two associates with the greatest expertise in such matters Frank Coluccio and NYC Community Fiber’s Lou Klepner were not able to be present. Also, it was decided, rather than attempt a coherent edit of 2+ hours of audio, to videotape a follow-up meeting commencing with a more formal presentation, and both Frank and Lou in attendance.
This meeting took place on Weds 14 July 2010 at NYU. Video is now posted on the ISOC-NY site
On Monday Jun 28 2010 a small group of ISOC-NY members met with Hunter Newby, founder of Allied Fiber, to discuss the company’s plans to encircle the entire USA with a dark fiber ring with carrier neutral access at any point . It was a very stimulating talk lasting over 2 hours.
