Clay Shirky II – Cognitive Surplus – out now

cognitive surplus

cognitive surplus Clay Shirky’s second book Cognitive Surplus: Creativity and Generosity in a Connected Age is now out. At ISOC-NY we well remember when Clay first expounded these ideas to our ears at the ‘Futures of the Internet’ forum at NYU in April 2008.

Cory Doctorow in his Boing Boing review sums up the theme of the book thus:

Shirky’s hypothesis is that a lot of the 20th century stuff we used to take for granted — most people didn’t want to create media, people didn’t value homemade and amateur productions, no one would pitch in to create something for others to enjoy unless they were being paid — weren’t immutable laws of nature, but accidents of history. The Internet has undone those accidents, by making it possible for more people to make and do cool stuff, especially together.

HTTPS Everywhere: Firefox plugin that switches on crypto whenever it’s available

The Electronic Frontier Foundation and The Onion Router (TOR) project have teamed up to release a new privacy-enhancing Firefox plugin called HTTPS Everywhere. It was inspired by Google’s new encrypted search engine, and it ensures that whenever you visit a site that accepts encrypted connections, your browser switches into encrypted mode, hiding your traffic from snoops on your local network and at your ISP. HTTPS Everywhere covers Google search, Wikipedia, Twitter, Identi.ca, Facebook, EFF, Tor, Scroogle, DuckDuckGo, Ixquick and other smaller search engines.

New NYC #OpenGov Data hearing on amended bill – June 21 2010

NEW YORK, June 10, 2009 – On June 21, 2010 at 10:00am on the 16th Floor Public Hearing Room of 250 Broadway, New York, NY (across from City Hall Park), the New York City Council Committee on Technology will hold a hearing on Introduction 029-2010, seeking to establish open data standards for all city agencies.  Int. 029-2010 (formerly Intro. 991-2009) aims to increase government transparency and facilitate easier access to public data.

Beyond the ‘good government’ benefits of this legislation, the bill will also unlock City data to enable web developers and entrepreneurs to interact with City government in new and unforeseen ways.  Data published under this legislation will be readable by any computer device, including laptops and phones, for innovative developments.  This Gov 2.0 inspired transparency legislation targets application developers, startups, small businesses, and academics with the ultimate goal of strengthening the connection between government and the public, while re-energizing the small business-tech sectors and highlighting New York’s digital future.
