On 4 February 2026, eco’s topDNS Initiative, in cooperation with the Digital Trust & Safety Partnership (DTSP), hosted the first topDNS Best Practice webinar of 2026, ‘Applying the DTSP Safe Framework to Hosting, Registries, and Registrars: From Compliance to Operational Maturity‘. Speakers Farzaneh Badiei and David Sullivan focused on how infrastructure providers can apply the DTSP Safe Framework (ISO/IEC 25389) to strengthen trust and safety practices beyond baseline compliance. The discussion framed the topic in the context of expanding global online safety regulation – particularly the EU Digital Services Act (DSA) and its transparency reporting obligations – and the need for a shared, globally usable vocabulary and approach that reflects different infrastructure roles.

This 10th topDNS session took a deep dive on measuring DNS Abuse, what are the pros and cons of various methods, challenges, and limitations, in particular, technical aspects of the most appropriate way to measure and collect data for each abusive URL.

WEBCAST MAY 2 – topDNS Best Practice Webinar: A partnership to empower domain name registries to disrupt CSAM

ISOC LIVEOn Thursday May 2, 2024, at 5pm-6pm CEST (15:00-16:00 UTC) Public Interest Registry (PIR), Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) & eco’s topDNS Initiative will host a webinar ‘A partnership to empower domain name registries to disrupt CSAM‘. The session will introduce a new partnership that will empower all domain name registries to disrupt sites dedicated to the commercial distribution and exploitation of online child sexual abuse material (CSAM), announced in February.

The new program includes a pioneering sponsorship agreement whereby PIR will sponsor other registries and registry service providers with free access to two key IWF services, Domain Alerts and the Top-Level Domain (TLD) Hopping List. TLD hopping is a practice whereby criminal websites are taken offline only to reappear, often with the same content and name, but under a different top-level domain. With more registries having access to the lists, there will be fewer places for criminals running abuse “brands” to try to register their sites.

isoc.liveOn Tuesday November 28, 2023 at 17:00 CET (16:00 UTC) the DNS Abuse Institute and eco’s topDNS Initiative host a webinar ‘topDNS Best Practice Series: DNSAI Compass Dashboards – Benchmarking the prevalence and persistence of malware and phishing‘. This is the fifth in a series of topDNS best practice webinars to showcase what the domain name industry is doing to fight DNS abuse.

DNSAI Compass (“Compass”) has been measuring and reporting on the persistence and prevalence of phishing and malware in registrar and Top Level Domain (TLD) zones for over a year. The project reports on general abuse trends across the entire DNS ecosystem, including mitigation rates, and whether the registration was compromised or malicious.

In June 2023 Compass began ‘Specific Reporting’, which is intended to show the spectrum of how malicious phishing and malware is concentrated across the DNS registration ecosystem. It identifies registrars and TLDs with higher and lower relative volumes of malicious domain registration in their Domains Under Management (DUM), or new registrations.

Fighting abuse online is first and foremost a matter of taking appropriate action, taken by the appropriate party, taken at the appropriate time. Speaking of time, reducing the uptime of maliciously used domain names is crucial. But how can the decision-making process be standardized to make clear decisions, make the decision-making process scalable and also balance the expectations between the sender and the receiver of abuse reports? Jeffrey Bedser, CEO of CleanDNS will explain how standardized evidencing allows for rapid correlation and mitigation of abused domains by the appropriate party, how evidencing thresholds can be established and how online harms can be addressed via standardized evidence packages.
