Video: ISOC-NY at Innovate/Activate IP Unconference #opengov

As part of our OneWebDay celebration ISOC-NY sponsored and contributed to the Innovate/Activate IP Activism Unconference at New York Law School on Sep 24-25 2010.  Joly MacFie was on the ‘Replicate / Recreate’ panel on Friday, where he talked about the Internet Society, and also his background in punk rock. (Video) – (Silverlight required).

Then in the Saturday unconference sessions  Joly expanded on the same theme (no video at present) and new ISOC-NY director Glover Wright gave a talk on his efforts this past summer promoting open government data initiatives in India. (video below)

NY Senate releases iPad app #opengov

NY State SenateThe New York State Senate today announced availability of “NYSenate for iPad,” the first application in the nation developed by a legislative body for the Apple iPad. The application can be downloaded for free today from the Apple iTunes App Store.

Like its predecessor, NYSenate Mobile for iPhones and Android phones, the app enables users to search for bill information, contact their Senator, review event calendars, read Senator’s blogs, watch archived video of Senate Session, Committee Meetings and Public Hearings, and even submit Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests.

“NYSenate for iPad” was built entirely in-house by Senate staff, at no additional cost to taxpayers. As with all software developed within the Senate, this mobile app has also been released at (see http://github.com/nysenatecio) under dual BSD and GPLv3 open-source software licenses; other legislatures, as well as non-profit organizations, media and small businesses are free to leverage the software to develop their own custom applications for the iPad.

New NYC #OpenGov Data hearing on amended bill – June 21 2010

NEW YORK, June 10, 2009 – On June 21, 2010 at 10:00am on the 16th Floor Public Hearing Room of 250 Broadway, New York, NY (across from City Hall Park), the New York City Council Committee on Technology will hold a hearing on Introduction 029-2010, seeking to establish open data standards for all city agencies.  Int. 029-2010 (formerly Intro. 991-2009) aims to increase government transparency and facilitate easier access to public data.

Beyond the ‘good government’ benefits of this legislation, the bill will also unlock City data to enable web developers and entrepreneurs to interact with City government in new and unforeseen ways.  Data published under this legislation will be readable by any computer device, including laptops and phones, for innovative developments.  This Gov 2.0 inspired transparency legislation targets application developers, startups, small businesses, and academics with the ultimate goal of strengthening the connection between government and the public, while re-energizing the small business-tech sectors and highlighting New York’s digital future.

U.S. House of Representatives unveils HouseLive.gov -searchable / downloadable video webcast system

The U.S. House of Representatives has unveiled searchable / downloadable video webcast system HouseLive.gov. Here is Speaker Pelosi’s announcement.

This service is from Granicus, who already do a similar thing for Los Angeles and San Francisco’s City Councils, amongst others. It’s a proven system. You can see them here pitching NYC. The search facility is great, allowing viewers to jump directly to the point in any video where a certain phrase is mentioned. That, combined with the fact they also offer downloads puts them way ahead of anything in central government – including the FCC!

The only possible criticism is that it is based on proprietary software, with Microsoft’s Silverlight plug-in doing the streaming, and iPod-ready mp4 and mp3 for downloads.
