FCX2013The 2013 Students for Free Culture Conference will take place on April 20th and 21st, 2013 at New York Law School. Through panels and keynote speakers, FCX2013 will focus on current issues in intellectual property law, open access to educational resources, maker culture, and technology policy. Through workshops, the conference will revisit the core pillars of the free culture movement, examine the success stories from our movement, and identify new ways in which Students for Free Culture can advocate for a more free, open, and participatory digital environment. Admission is free. ISOC-NY will provide streaming via the Internet Society Chapters Webcasting Channel.

This one-and-a-half-day conference will bring together leading thinkers about law and the printed word. Speakers from academia, publishing, libraries, and the practicing bar will detail the sea change sweeping over publishing and debate how law should adapt. NYLS IILPOn March 27 2012 the New York Law School Institute for Information Law and Policy will present a panel : International Perspectives on Copyright Reform. The program will address various international approaches to copyright law regulation as a means to combat piracy. The discussion will focus on recent legislation such as HADOPI (three strikes) in France, the now-abandoned PIPA/SOPA in the United States, Sinde Law in Spain, as well as international treaties such as ACTA. Panelists will compare the effectiveness of the legislation and the impact that it has on curbing online piracy.

Claud AikenThe New York Law School Institute for Information Law & Policy is holding a discussion with NYLS Alum, Claude Aiken ’08, about his role at the FCC.  Mr. Aiken is Legal Counsel to the Senior Advisor to the Chairman on Broadband at the FCC, where he advises the Chairman’s office on issues relating to the National Broadband Plan.  Prior to this, he was an Honors Program Attorney in the Wireline Competition Bureau where he focused on broadband competition and universal service issues.  He also serves as a board member and general counsel for 100cameras, Inc., a non-profit that uses photography to help underprivileged youth.
