VIDEO: NYC Social Infrastructure & Tech Ecosystem: Are We At An Inflection Point? @disruptivetechs

On Monday October 27 2014 the Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY), digital.nyc, and Gust, joined with the Disruptive Technologists in NYC to present NYC Social Infrastructure & Tech Ecosystem: Are We At An Inflection Point?. The financial crisis of 2008 was an inflection point where Mayor Bloomberg was widely credited for reinventing the traditional Wall Street Economy through technology entrepreneurship. Yet some criticized his success as having been more of a wealth creation model for a narrow section of the City. Are we now at a second inflection point? At the recent press conference in Dumbo to announce Digital.NYC, the City’s new hub for tech and startups, Mayor Bill De Blasio talked about his new technology initiatives. So this brings up the question: Will things get worse or will they get better? What will happen to the gains made by the Bloomberg Administration? Or will there not even be a new inflection point, and things will remain the same? What does it take to make a successful tech ecosystem?Entrepreneurs David Rose (New York Angels, Gust.com) and Chaz Mee (Brand Innovation Strategist) tackled these questions, ably guided by moderator Professor Bruce Bachenheimer, Director, Entrepreneurship Lab, Pace University, NYC. nyc digitalNYC Digital, part of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, is mounting a series of listening sessions throughout the City this summer with the aim of encouraging feedback on New York City’s innovation progress and contributing to the upcoming version of the City’s Digital Roadmap. New Yorkers are invited to attend the sessions to share their thoughts about how to realize New York City’s potential as the world’s leading digital city, across the areas of Internet access, education, open data, engagement and industry, adding new goals and objectives to the City’s innovation strategy. The first of these, co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Tech Meetup and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, was held in Brooklyn on Thursday, July 11, 2013, and was webcast by ISOC-NY via the Internet Society Chapters Webcast Channel. @NYCDigital’s Code Corps: A National Guard for technologists #nyc @codecorps

NYC Digital

NYC DigitalAnnounced in NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s State of the City address earlier today was the creation of the Code Corps, a public-private partnership scheme to co-ordinate volunteer technology responses in cases of emergency. This follows initiatives by the New York Tech Meetup in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. Founding participants include some of the City’s top startups and academic institutions.

According to the NYC Digital division of the Mayor’s office:

Code Corps is the nation’s first municipal program that engages vetted volunteer technologists to realize lifesaving City government initiatives with an emphasis on emergency and disaster recovery needs. Code Corps partners include nonprofit and private sector organizations whose data scientists, developers and designers will partner with City agency representatives to develop strategic projects that serve civic needs. To facilitate effective collaboration, partners will liaise with the Data Advisory and Research Taskforce (DART), a newly formed advisory committee of data scientists, developers and experts from across City government.
