isoc liveOn Thursday March 30 2023 at 09:30-11:00 EDT (13:30-15:00 UTC)  Technology for Democracy Cohort co-leads Estonia, the United Kingdom, and Access Now, together with New America, Accountability Lab, Open Data Charter, the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensics Research Lab, and the Internet Society present ‘Championing Digital Democracy for All: Collective Action from the Technology for Democracy Cohort‘. The cohort will tackle priority action areas, including technology to support open and secure access to the Internet, and strengthening digital public infrastructure and tech for good governance, and explore how we can drive cross-sector collaboration among open, democratic societies beyond this year’s Summit for Democracy.

On July 28th 2014, the 100th day before the US Election on November 4 2014, our colleagues at Goodnik partnered with civictech startup Issue Voter to present Issues + Innovation = Impact which brought together people from government, nonprofits, and startups, to discuss tri-sector collaboration and civic engagement. After a demo of the IssueVoter platform, which enables citizens to not only vote on legislation, plus track how their representatives themselves vote, and vice versa, there was a panel discussion featuring Art Chang, Chair, NYC Voter Assistance Advisory Committee, and Ron Gonen, New York City Deputy Commissioner for Recycling and Sustainability, moderated by IssueVoter founder Maria Yuan. NYC Votes, Democracy Works, and the Open Source Election Technology (OSET) Foundation demonstrated their work and case studies of implementations. This was followed by a panel, speakers: Art Chang, Chair, New York City Voter Assistance Advisory Committee; Greg Miller, Co-Founder and Chief Development Officer, OSET Foundation; Seth Flaxman, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Democracy Works; Michael Ryan, Executive Director, NYC Board of Elections; Doug Kellner, Co-Chair, New York State Board of Elections; and Amy Loprest, Executive Director, NYC Campaign Finance Board. On a brief visit to NYC civic technology leader Steven Clift, a White House Champion of Change for Open Government, at short notice set up a presentation – New Voices – The Civic Technology and Open Government Opportunity at the UNDP offices on December 18 2013. At issue is whether growing open government and civic technology will ironically lead to greater concentration of power among fewer, often similar voices or will more open government and community engagement online lead to better government decisions, stronger communities and more problem-solving? Clift highlighted myth-busting research from the Pew Internet and American Life project and shared unique highlights from E-Democracy’s BeNeighbors.org initiative that is designed to foster local neighborhood engagement online that builds bridges across income, race, and native-born and immigrant communities.
