WEBCAST FEB 23 – Manthan: Competition Regulatory Landscape India needs!

ISOC LIVEOn Thursday 23 February 2023 at 4pm-6pm IST (10:30-12:30 UTC) CCAOI hosts an online interactive stakeholder discussion ‘Manthan: Competition Regulatory Landscape India needs!‘. The 53rd Report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance (PSCF), released on 22 December 2022, titled ‘Anti-Competitive Practices in Big Tech’, proposed the creation of a Digital Competition Act (“DCA”). CCAOI is facilitating this stakeholder discussion to bring forth more clarity on the proposed Amendment Bill and DCA and to deliberate on what more is needed to create a competition regulatory landscape in India that effectively balances sustainable competition, consumer interest while encouraging freedom of trade.

On September 4 2014 FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler delivered a speech “The Facts and Future of Broadband Competition” at 1776 in Washington DC. While currently the FCC defines broadband as a 4/1mbps Internet connection, and is considering raising that to 10/?mpbs, Chairman Wheeler suggested that, given the number of devices in the average home, 25mbps down was “table stakes in 21st century communications”. Deprecating the abilty of DSL or wireless to meet the demand, he outlined the lack of competition in the current marketplace, as indicate in the chart below.

Chairman Wheeler outlined a four point FCC plan to increase competition:

  • Where competition exists, the FCC will protect it.
  • Where greater competition can exist, the FCC will encourage it.
  • Where meaningful competition is not available, the FCC will work to create it.
  • Where competition cannot be expected to exist, the FCC must shoulder the responsibility of promoting deployment.

On the topic of net neutrality he affirmed his belief that “minimum service requirements will suffice”, and made no comment about mergers.

ISOC-DCOn Friday April 26 2013 the Internet Society’s Washington DC Chapter (ISOC-DC) for its April Happy Hour will join with the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) to present a breakfast discussion: Bandwidth for the Buck: The State of Broadband Access & Competition in the US. A panel of distinguished experts, moderated by ISOC-NY board member Dave Burstein, will address such questions as:

  • What is the state of broadband competition in the US?
  • Do American consumers really pay more for slower speeds?
  • What is the best way to get to universal access?
  • What objectives should national broadband policy try to achieve?

On Wednesday, October 10, 2012, the Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings  presented Fostering Internet Competition in Washington DC. The event explored policies to maintain Internet competition. A panel of experts discussed policy recommendations that encourage innovation without stifling competition. The panel comprised Susan Crawford, Douglas Rushkoff, and antitrust expert Spencer Waller.  The event was webcast live, and the video can be seen below.
