On Tuesday 2 November 2021 at 13:00-14:30 UTC the African IXP Association, in partnership with the Internet Society, host ‘80/20 by 2020: What next?‘. The focus of this 14th webinar in the Virtual Peering Series – Africa will be on the key findings of the Internet Society’s report “Moving Toward an Interconnected Africa: The 80/20 Initiative”. The report, published in July 2021, provides useful insights on the growth of the Internet exchange point (IXP) ecosystem in Africa – focusing on specific countries.
The Africa peering and interconnection community set a goal in 2010 to locally exchange 80% of Internet traffic consumed in Africa, with only 20% routed from outside the continent.
However, not all IXPs have managed to reach the development stage, with 80% local traffic as initially planned. Our panelists in this session will discuss the current situation, the success stories and underlying challenges and the way forward to foster IXP growth and increase local traffic exchange on the continent.

L’objectif de ce 14e webinaire de la série Virtual Peering – Afrique sera mis sur les principales conclusions du rapport de l’Internet Society intitulé “Vers une Afrique interconnectée : l’initiative 80/20”. Ce rapport, publié en juillet 2021, fourni des indications utiles sur la croissance de l’écosystème des points d’échange Internet (IXP) en Afrique – tout en étant axé sur des pays spécifiques.
La communauté Internet du peering et de l’interconnexion africain s’est fixée un objectif en 2010 pour que 80% du trafic Internet africain soit accessible localement en Afrique, avec seulement 20% provenant de l’extérieur du continent.
Cependant, ce ne sont pas tous les IXP qui ont réussi à atteindre ce stade de développement, avec 80% de trafic local comme prévu initialement. Ainsi, les panélistes de ce webinaire discuteront de la situation actuelle, des exemples de réussite et des défis sous-jacents, ainsi que de la voie à suivre pour favoriser la croissance des IXP et augmenter les échanges de trafic local sur le continent.
